SAM-e dosage for depression?

I started taking Sam-e several weeks ago. Began with 200 mg and am now up to 800 mg (800 mg, I read somewhere is the minimal amount for therapeutic value). What is the general timeframe before I can tell it is working? And do you know of cases where it takes more than 800 mg before becoming effective?

(I also take Omega 3 supplements. I have tried 5-HTP in the past, but noticed no improvement in how I felt.)

Thank you for your wonderful website!

Claudia

ANSWER:

Hi Claudia,

Thanks for your question on SAM-e. I haven't heard of a recommended dosage above 200mg. I know Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D. author of 'Mind Boosters: Natural Supplements that Enhance Your Mood, Memory, and Mind' recommends only 200mg.

In fact he writes...

CAUTION: Anxiety, mania or manic episodes may occur if you take high doses of SAM-e. Once you have enough SAM-e in your system, you may only need to take 100 mg every day or every other day.

Have you also looked at the possibility of food allergies - such as to wheat?

Here's more info on allergies and depression...

Keep digging! You'll find out the cause! Continue to go through the e-course and then handbook if needed.

There is hope!

Blessings,

Merri Ellen
