What Is Situational Depression And What Can You Do About It?

Situational depression is depression caused by situations in your life. You could be going through a divorce, suffer job loss or suffer from missed opportunities and missed dreams. You’re not alone if you’re suffering from this type of depression because we all can experience loss and hardship and disappointments. But, when our disappointment turns to discouragement and then to depression, this becomes situational depression.

Physical things such as food allergies, thyroid problems or diabetes can cause physical health depression but when we suffer situational depression, it’s because of our chosen responses to life’s difficulties.

After going through a crisis in my own life, I found strength by reading people’s biographies of how they went through hardship and chose not to become defeated. Instead, they rose above it and courageously moved on. They met their challenges head on and looked at failure as opportunities. Those who avoided suffering situation depression did so by their chosen responses.

Situational Depression Treatment - Good News for Sufferers

If you are suffering from depression caused by a life situation, this is good news because this type of depression is often much easier to detect and discover what the cause is.

As I mentioned, I suffered situation depression due to crisis of job loss and betrayal of a trusted employer. I remember going through counseling, along with the nutritional and exercise therapy I chose to take after anti-depressants made me suicidal, and I remember the day talking with my counselor that my thinking went from ‘victim’ to ‘victor’. I decided I was no longer going to be the victim. Instead, I was going to rise above what happened to me and conquer it. Instead of seeking revenge, I was going to help others avoid what I went through. It was at this moment that things started to change for me. I set out and started reading the medical journals to discover what really cures depression (which you can read in my e-course). Once I learned this, I applied it to my life and that made all the difference.

Curing situation depression requires you to decide no longer to be a victim and this can be achieved through a good counselor and a willingness to work through the dirty laundry in your life. It’s hard but it’s so rewarding in the end. When you understand that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it, you have the power to rise above most anything.

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life… We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.” – Chuck Swindoll
